Newcastle United fans have been warned about online ticket scammers ahead of Sunday’s Carabao Cup final.

Northumbria Police warned fans to purchase tickets through verified channels only, after a suspected social media scam.

“We’ve been notified via Action Fraud of a potential ticket scam for the Newcastle Utd vs Liverpool Carabao Cup Final,” police said on social media platform Facebook.

“It was reported that tickets were being advertised and sold via a group chat for the game due to place later this month at Wembley Stadium.”

“It is believed the group chat has since been closed. However, we want fans to remain vigilant in the run-up to the big day.”

“We’d always advise people to only purchase tickets through a trusted source, whether that’s online or in person.”

SPARK Sunderland got in touch with a suspected scammer on Twitter, who offered tickets for the big game for £300.

However, when Spark replied and asked for proof of the ticket, such as a screenshot, the suspected scammer ended communication.

Fans who did not manage to secure tickets through the club have been trying to buy them from third party platforms or social media accounts, and some have ended up losing money,

Twitch streamer/NUFC fan DROGON517 said, “In some ways, it’s fans’ fault because you should only buy tickets from reputable sources.”

A Spokesperson from Magpie247 said: “It’s disgusting. Fans should not try to profit from other fans.”

“Also, clubs need to release the maximum number of tickets to fans and not go corporate sponsors and the like.”

” More official tickets means demand is met, and the need and market for these scammer tickets stops in an instant.

“Look at the Wembley ticket allocations of 30k each in a 90k stadium. How is that ever right?”

31-Year-old Reece Calvert told the BBC that he had spent £295 on tickets with him first receiving the information through a WhatsApp group.

Newcastle United season ticket holder Luke De Redder said:

“I think it’s awful, but the club can’t do anything about stuff like that, but there seems to be more and more and more scammers getting about.”

Newcastle United put information on their website reiterating that the resale of tickets was not allowed.

The club declined to comment when approached by Spark.

The English Football League (EFL) has also said that anyone found with invalid tickets would not be allowed into Wembley for the game.
