Oscar-Winning director Steve McQueen’s new film Blitz (set during the German bombing of London) is among the many titles playing and will have its world premiere at the event. The film follows a mother (Saoirse Ronan) and son (Elliot Heffernan) as they navigate their way through the Blitz in World War II London.

Before the film will play, there will be a pre premiere gala event celebrating the occasion that includes a champagne reception from Lanchester Wines (a family business in Durham) and food served by Riley’s Fish Shack. Tyneside will also screen more films from the festival, such as Andrea Arnold’s new film starring Barry Keoghan called Bird, Conclave starring Ralph Fiennes and Stanley Tucci, and an all-star animated flick The Wild Robot that stars the likes of Lupita Nyong’o and Pedro Pascal.

Tyneside Cinema’s chief executive Nic Greenan, who will introduce Blitz, said: ”The London Film Festival is one of the most important events in the cinema calendar and is chosen by a host of top directors to premiere their latest films. The Tyneside is the only venue in the North East where you can get a first glimpse of these movies so we wanted to start off the season with a real regional flavour”.

Other films that will feature include Amy Adams’s new film Nightbitch, lego animation Piece by Piece and Anora, among others.
