Spark FM is Sunderland’s community radio station. Based at the University of Sunderland’s St Peter’s Campus, Spark FM makes use of industry standard equipped studios and the extensive experience of the University’s staff to help create fantastic community radio.
As a community radio station, Spark FM provides a platform for local people to inform the community of news and events which are of interest to our target audience. We pride ourselves on being in a position to offer an accessible medium where people can talk to others; from their neighbourhood, about issues which concern them. Having the ability to focus on Sunderland allows us to provide localised programming; local music, events and developing issues. We therefore have the capacity to provide content and entertainment relevant to those in the surrounding area.
Spark FM is a community radio station serving the 15-24 year olds of Sunderland. The station aims to create opportunities for people to tell their stories and contribute to discussions that affect them on a local and national level.
We also offer the opportunity to get involved in Spark FM as volunteers, for whom we will provide full training, therefore no experience is required and you don’t have to be 15-24 or live in Sunderland, in order to get involved. Advantages to this include a passion for radio and a willingness to produce creative radio programmes for young people in Sunderland and the surrounding area.
Spark FM will look at each individual’s skills and interests and encourage them to volunteer in areas of the station that suit their skills. There are many opportunities, both ‘on air’ and behind the scenes. We have opportunities available in production, sales, promotions, community and to mention but a few.
As well as learning radio skills, volunteers will also enhance and learn skills in:
*Confidence Building
*Communication Skills
*Team work and team building
*Organization skills
*Community awareness
*Social awareness
*Media awareness
*Interpersonal skills
